KUNINGAN – Di tengah ketegangan pasca proklamasi kemerdekaan 17 Agustus 1945, sebuah peristiwa penting tercatat dalam sejarah perjuangan diplomasi Indonesia. Perundingan Linggarjati, yang berlangsung di Desa Linggarjati Kecamatan Cilimus menjadi tonggak awal pengakuan kedaulatan Indonesia di mata dunia, meski belum sepenuhnya sesuai cita-cita kemerdekaan.
Pemerintah Republik Indonesia yang pada saat itu berpusat di Yogyakarta, sementara Belanda kembali menguasai Jakarta. Ketika rencana perundingan damai disepakati, muncul masalah pelik, pihak Republik enggan berunding di Jakarta yang dianggap sebagai simbol kekuasaan kolonial, sedangkan Belanda menolak datang ke Yogyakarta, jantung pemerintahan republik yang baru berdiri.
Kebuntuan itu, lahirlah ide untuk mencari titik tengah yang aman dan netral. Kuningan, sebuah kota pegunungan yang tenang di Jawa Barat, pada saat itu menjadi pilihan ideal. Letaknya relatif di tengah jalur Yogyakarta-Jakarta, jauh dari basis militer namun mudah diakses oleh kedua belah pihak.
“Selain dari letak geografis, Kenapa Kuningan dipilih sebagai tempat perundingan, tentu ada rujukan atau usulan dari Menteri Sosial RI pertama yaitu Maria Ulfah Santoso yang merupakan putri dari Bupati Kuningan periode 1923 hingga 1939 yaitu Radem Adipati Arya Mohammad Ahmad,” ujar Agus Suparman, selaku juru pelihara Gedung Naskah Linggarjati, belum lama ini.
Sebelum dijadikan tempat perundingan, awal mulanya gedung tersebut bernama Hotel Merdeka, bahkan sempat dijadikan sebagai markas badan keamanan rakyat. Menurutnya, meski tidak ada keterlibatan tokoh Kuningan dalam meja perundingan itu, tetapi di balik layar, justru ada masyarakat sekitar yang menyediakan logistik, akomodasi dan menjaga keamanan lingkungan.
“Karena kan gedung ini bekas hotel. Selain Maria Ulfah Santoso, ayahnya mantan Bupati Kuningan, mungkin membantu memfasilitasi persiapan lokasi dan pengamanan,” ujarnya.
