Sebagai guru, kita memiliki peran strategis sebagai individu yang dapat membangun peradaban melalui peserta didik yang kita didik hari ini. Jangan sampai peran kita sebagai guru hanya sebatas seperti kritik Paulo Freire terhadap sistem pendidikan gaya “bank”, di mana guru hanya berperan sebagai petugas yang mentransfer dan menerima pengetahuan semata.
Jangan sampai anak-anak kita setiap hari berangkat ke sekolah, belajar banyak hal, lalu lulus dan menggenggam ijazah, tetapi kemudian baru menyadari bahwa mereka tidak mengerti apa-apa tentang kehidupan.
Pendidikan sejatinya merupakan senjata pamungkas dalam meningkatkan kualitas hidup manusia. Anak-anak kita menaruh harapan besar melalui pendidikan agar mampu memutus rantai kemiskinan dan memperoleh kehidupan yang layak di masa depan.
Namun, kita juga tahu bahwa betapa mahalnya ongkos pendidikan di negara berkembang ini, dan sekaligus betapa ironisnya sistem pendidikan yang justru sering gagal mengentaskan kemiskinan.
Ini menjadi cermin besar bagi kita semua, terutama bagi para pendidik. Maka itu, pertanyaan mendasarnya adalah: apakah kita sudah benar-benar merawat mimpi anak-anak kita?
Apakah kita sudah memberikan teladan yang hidup, bukan hanya nasihat kosong? Apakah kita sudah menyirami mimpi mereka dengan dorongan, semangat, dan motivasi positif agar tumbuh subur?
Anak-anak kita pasti memiliki mimpi.
Ketika masih SD, mereka bermimpi ingin menjadi dokter. Saat SMP, mereka bercita-cita menjadi polisi. Ketika beranjak SMA, mereka ingin menjadi tentara. Namun saat kuliah, cita-cita itu mulai pudar, berganti dengan pikiran pragmatis: “yang penting cepat lulus.”
Dan setelah lulus, mereka kembali pasrah: “yang penting bisa kerja.”
