Perundingan Linggarjati berlangsung, tanggal 11-13 November 1946. Momen itu membahas penentuan hubungan politik dan wilayah antara Republik Indonesia dengan Belanda setelah Proklamasi. Pihak Republik meminta pengakuan kedaulatan penuh atas seluruh wilayah bekas Hindia Belanda akan tetapi Belanda hanya mau mengakui wilayah RI yang dikuasai de facto meliputi Jawa, Madura, dan Sumatra.
“Isi pokok dari perundingan Linggarjati ada tiga, Belanda mengakui secara de facto teapi hanya meliputi wilayah kekuasaannya yaitu Jawa, Madura, dan Sumatera. Yang kedua pembentukan negara serikat, kemudian yang ketiga negara serikat akan membentuk Uni Indonesia-Belanda yang ketuanya itu Ratu dari Belanda,” ujarnya
Tokoh yang telibat dalam perundingan tersebut diwakili oleh Sutan Syahrir, AK Gani, Susanto Tirtoprojo, Mohammad Roem. Sedangkan pemerintahan Belanda diwakili oleh Wim Schermerhorn, H.J. Van Mook, Max van Pool,F.de Boer. Sedangkan mediator dalam perundingan tersebut yaitu Lord Killearn yang berasal dari Inggris. Pada tanggal 10, tokoh yang terlibat sudah tiba di lokasi perundingan yang merupakan masa persiapan.
Pada akhirnya, meski Perjanjian Linggarjati baru ditandatangani secara resmi pada 25 Maret 1947, kesepakatan yang lahir dari perundingan ini menjadi langkah awal diplomasi Indonesia di kancah internasional. Namun, isi perjanjian tersebut memicu pro dan kontra di kalangan pejuang kemerdekaan.
Sebagian menilai perjanjian ini terlalu menguntungkan Belanda, sementara pihak lain melihatnya sebagai strategi politik untuk mendapatkan pengakuan dan waktu mempersiapkan kekuatan. Hingga kini, Gedung Naskah Linggarjati tetap berdiri kokoh sebagai saksi bisu bagaimana sebuah desa kecil di Kuningan pernah menjadi pusat perhatian dunia, mengukir sejarah penting perjalanan bangsa menuju kemerdekaan yang utuh.
